How Pre-Grading Works at Graded Investors

Submitting cards for grading can be exciting — and expensive. The difference between a PSA 10 and a PSA 9 (or CGC/BGS equivalents) can be massive, and most collectors don’t want to gamble on high submission fees without knowing what they’re really sending in.

That’s where pre-grading comes in.

At Graded Investors, our pre-grading process is designed to help you submit with confidence by identifying potential issues before your cards leave your hands — so you know what to grade, what to hold, and what to sell raw.

Below is exactly how it works.

What “Pre-Grading” Means

Pre-grading is a detailed review of each card’s condition using strong lighting and magnification to evaluate the factors grading companies care about most:

  • Centering

  • Corners

  • Edges

  • Surface (scratches, print lines, dents, dimples, scuffs, stains)

  • Print defects (roller lines, factory marks, whitening, chipping)

The goal isn’t to “promise a grade.” No one can guarantee grades — grading is still human evaluation. The goal is to give you a realistic expectation and help you make the smartest submission decisions.

Why Pre-Grading Matters

Pre-grading helps you:

  • Avoid submitting cards that won’t hit your target grade

  • Save money on grading fees by filtering out risky cards

  • Prioritize your best cards first (especially if you’re submitting a lot)

  • Decide whether to grade, sell raw, or hold

  • Set realistic expectations so you aren’t surprised later

If you’re submitting for resale, pre-grading becomes even more valuable — because one overlooked flaw can completely change your ROI.

Our Step-by-Step Pre-Grading Process

1) Secure Intake + Basic Check-In

When your cards arrive, we check them in and confirm everything is accounted for.

For higher-value submissions, we can do documented intake photos so there’s clarity on the condition at arrival.

2) Proper Handling + Protective Workflow

Cards are handled with collector-grade care and kept protected throughout the process:

  • Secure, organized staging

  • Sleeved/toploaded or semi-rigids as appropriate

  • Minimal handling (only as needed for inspection)

3) Condition Review (The Pre-Grade)

Each card is evaluated with the same mindset grading companies use. We’re looking for:

  • Whitening, chipping, or edge wear

  • Corner softness

  • Surface scratches and print lines

  • Indentations/dents (often the biggest “silent killer”)

  • Centering that could cap the grade

4) Clear Recommendations (So You Can Decide)

After review, we help you decide what makes sense:

Grade it now

Best candidates that look strong for your target grade

Hold / don’t grade

Nice cards, but not worth the grading cost based on condition/market

Sell raw

Cards that can still move quickly without grading

Consider a different grading path

If your goal is protection/display vs. max ROI, the “right” choice may change.

5) Prep for Submission (If You Want Us To Submit)

If you choose to move forward, we can prep and submit through the appropriate grading service (depending on what you’re using). Prep typically includes:

  • Proper sleeving/semi-rigid setup

  • Accurate labeling / organization

  • Clean, careful packaging for shipment

What We Don’t Do (And Why That’s Good for You)

We don’t guarantee grades.

Grading is subjective, and standards can shift slightly over time. Anyone guaranteeing a grade is setting you up for disappointment.

We don’t “overhype” cards.

We’d rather be honest upfront than let you spend money grading a card that was never a real 10 contender.

Our job is to help you make smart, informed decisions.

Who Pre-Grading Is Best For

Pre-grading is perfect if you:

  • Have a stack of cards and want to submit only the best

  • Are submitting higher value cards and don’t want surprises

  • Are chasing PSA 10s and need realistic expectations

  • Flip graded cards and want better submission ROI

  • Want a professional second set of eyes before sending cards off

What You Should Do Before Sending Cards

To get the best results:

  • Keep cards in penny sleeves + semi-rigids/toploaders

  • Avoid “over-cleaning” (it can cause damage)

  • Separate any cards you already know you want graded

  • Tell us your goal: personal collection vs. resale ROI
